Now God is showing me how this really works. I keep telling myself, if I had all of the above, I would finally have what I want most: peace. What’s the one thing you need most in your life right now? Less stress? Fewer fears? A clearer mind? A sense of security? Our peace is found in the True and Living God and in a hope that transcends all that exists on this earth.

Our peace is not found in a constitution, a form of government, a political party or anything this world gives. There is one thing that is certain in all of this. Or was it? Was the psalmist speaking of peace among God’s people now, or perhaps later in a new city in a new earth in a new heaven? Perhaps it was both. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. However, when I read this, another passage came to mind:ġ Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the city also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. This is certainly the case for believers today. Dwelling with Him is like dwelling next to a peaceful river when the rest of the world is a like a raging sea. While the nations rage, He is still in control. There are some who say that this verse is metaphoric of God’s presence among His people in a chaotic world. You can’t have rich conversation without coffee (I wonder what coffee in eternity will be like?). I have to imagine that there will be amazing and rich conversations. People we have known and people we would never have known here on this earth. We are going to have eternity to fellowship with saints. That is the beauty of looking forward to eternal life in Jesus. For example, how did the Holy Spirit inspire him to write this particular lyric? Did the Lord give him a mental image of something? Did he have a vision of this scene? Was he somehow feeling inspired in a metaphoric or poetic way? Did he realize what he was actually writing at the time? There are so many questions I have for the person who wrote this Psalm when I meet him. 5 God is in the midst of her she shall not be moved God will help her when morning dawns. 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.
